WEEKS

In 2025, with approval from Emory University’s Institutional Review Board and funding from Vibratex (the company responsible for the Magic Wand brand of vibrators), Dr. Candice Hargons, Danielle Bezalel and research assistant Kasey Vigil conducted a first-of-its-kind 3-week intervention with 1,000 participants selected from 5,000+ applicants. Participants tracked stress, sleep, focus, confidence, body appreciation, partner connection, desire and sexual response.

The Study That Made Us Go "Aha!"

Researchers expected the Magic Wand Wellness Study to confirm a few familiar benefits of pleasure. What they found instead was more expansive.

Participants reported improvements in sleep, stress levels, confidence, connection, and even how they related to their own bodies. These “Aha” findings suggest that pleasure and sex toy use isn’t just a moment of relief. It’s a subtle but powerful way to reshape how we feel, how we show up, and how we care for ourselves.

When Was the Study?

When the study was designed there was no way to anticipate how different the world would be.  The baseline surveys were completed before the inauguration in early January 2025.  The study phases ran from February 1 – February 21, 2025. While we knew that sexual pleasure is worth studying, we could not have anticipated how rapidly the political climate in North America would change and how impacted our participants would be.

Aha Moment #1

Abstinence Led to Low Quality of Life

Nearly every measure dropped during abstinence and rose sharply during daily wand use, ending above baseline.

During Abstinence Week, participants reported the lowest levels of sleep quality, happiness, and confidence.

Those scores rose steadily through Magic Wand Week and remained high during Sex-as-Usual Week.

Although the numerical changes were modest (about 3-10%), the pattern was remarkably consistent across 1000 people:  a strong signal that daily pleasure routines contribute measurably to overall wellness.

“The week without sexual activity was worse and worse for emotional regulation and dissociation and depression symptoms. But 2 orgasms in seemed to put me back to my usual self.”

Aha Moment #2

Pleasure Is a Stress Reset

Participants used the wand to step away, reset, and manage daily stress.

Lower Scores = Less Perceived Stress

Axis: 2.6–3.3 (Lower is Better)
Values (approx.): Baseline 3.30, Abstinence 2.65, Magic Wand 2.60, Sex as Usual 2.62, Completion 2.70. Lower scores indicate lower perceived stress. 3.3 3.1 2.9 2.7 2.6 3.30 2.65 2.60 2.62 2.70 Baseline Abstinence Magic Wand Sex as Usual Completion

Across nearly all groups (age, orientation, menopause status, and baseline mood), the same pattern holds: the lowest stress appears during Wand and Sex-as-Usual weeks, with a small rebound after the study.

Aha Moment #3

Better Sleep

The negative impact of abstinence on sleep quality was only significant for people who reported medium or high levels of positive affect.

In other words, participants who reported low baseline positive affect did not experience worse sleep during the abstinence phase compared to other study phases.

We expect people with depressed mood to have lower sleep quality at baseline.

Sleep Improved During Magic Wand Week

  • Sleep Quality for Participants *without Depression +5%
  • Sleep Quality for Menopausal Participants +7.5%

*Participants with depression reported consistently low sleep quality during all stages of the study.

“I felt more present with my partner, more in tune with my own needs, and better able to communicate what I wanted. It transformed our intimacy.”

 – Study Participant

I let my partner try using it on me today, which was a very different experience from using it alone! We both enjoyed it a lot, so I’m looking forward to incorporating it more often into our activities.
